How often is a protective grounding system inspected?

According to REGULATION No. 4 of December 22and 2010. For the lightning protection of buildings, outdoor facilities, and open spaces, the intervals for conducting periodic inspections of lightning protection systems and the scope of such inspections are specified in the design in accordance with the operating conditions.

The deadlines may not exceed:

1. one year – for buildings and outdoor installations in the first category of lightning protection and for Class I lightning protection systems (for Lightning Protection Level I);
2. two years – for buildings and outdoor installations in the second category of lightning protection and for Class II lightning protection systems (for Lightning Protection Level II);
3. three years – for buildings, outdoor installations, and open areas classified as third-category lightning protection, and for Class III lightning protection systems (for lightning protection levels III and IV).

Periodic inspections shall include at least:

1. a visual inspection of the condition of the lightning rods and down conductors;
2. measuring the resistance of grounding electrodes.
